How to Fix a Clogged Kitchen Drain
Whenever you get a clogged kitchen drain it should be no wonder considering all of the junk
that we throw down them. Once this happens, water flow will become a problem and you will have to fix
your kitchen sink. Thankfully, fixing your clogged kitchen drain is not a difficult task even though there
are 2 different styles of kitchen sinks available today: those with 2 bowls and those with just one. Even
if you have a 2 bowl sink your drain lines will run into a single, common drain line. Of course, you will
have to be careful if there is a garbage disposal built into the drain line that you are working on.
First of all, you should know that there are numerous chemical drain cleaners available for fixing a clogged
kitchen drain. Most plumbers oppose using these for fixing a common clog. There are many reasons
for this but the most common reason is that the majority of clogs that can be broken up by the use of chemicals
can be taken care of just as easily with a plunger. You will find that some plumbers will tell you to
use drain cleaners as a way of maintaining your kitchen sink so that you will not have a clogged kitchen drain.
If you ever do decide to use these chemicals, it is a good idea to wear gloves, protective clothing and eye
protection because of how toxic they are.
Most of the time a clogged kitchen drain can be taken care of with a common plunger. Purchasing a really
good plunger will not cost you a lot of money, which is why every home should have one available just in case
they do get a clogged kitchen drain. Whenever you use a plunger you need to first remove the standing
water from the sink, leaving only enough to cover the bell shaped end of the plunger. If you happen to
have a double sink, then you are going to need to have someone hold a stopper tightly over the other drain outlet
so that water will not shoot out of it while you are using the plunger.
Make sure that you start slowly so that you get the air out of your plunger cup and fill it with water otherwise
you will splash both yourself and your kitchen with water. After doing this, use a series of short steady
plunges with an occasional hard one to break up the clog. This will take you approximately 5 minutes to
make between 15 and 20 good plunges.
Now if you find that your clogged kitchen drain cannot be fixed with a plunger, your next step should be to
rent a snake. Before doing this, make sure that your kitchen drain line is quite long. This way
you will not have any problems while using the snake. Of course, your other option is to hire a professional
plumber and let them take care of your clogged kitchen drain for you.
